Thankfully, this is a problem that the creator was conscious of and made a point to fix in rebirth, and from what I've seen he has done a great job. They were disappointing mostly because a lot of item synergies that you thought would work didn’t and tear effects/interactions were rather basic and paled in compassion to the effectiveness of other damage dealing methods. One of the more disappointing aspects of the first game was items synergies, or in other words the combing of two or more items to make cool interactions. While the amount of time people will spend playing Rebirth is still unknown, it can be reasonably assumed that it will be even greater than the original because of the various improvements to the game which I will describe in more detail down below. Basically Isaac Rebirths takes things that didn’t work, or should’ve worked better and improves on them. Isaac is one of those epic time vampires of a game, similar to DOTA, WOW or Skyrim, where people have spend 1000+ hours plus just playing the same game over. From a dollar to time perspective either binding of Isaac would be a great choice.
